Liz Webb

Nutshell                                        Liquid Cool                                        Live & Clicking

Liz Webb Every few decades you find an entertainer with the rare combination of musical talent, writing skills, technical competence and physical beauty that a special synergy is created . . . Liz Webb is one such entertainer.

Liz has been gifted with a naturally smooth and evocative singing voice that flows from her lips like warm honey . . . it is soft, breathy and sensual with an intimate feel equating to a smiling invitation to take your hat off, sit down and relax for a while.

A smooth singing voice is just one of Liz' considerable assets. Liz is also counted among the world's best female jazz flute players. Not content to settle with flute and rest on her laurels, Liz Webb also topped the state in piano, then increased her musical instrument repertoire even further by proving the electric bass feels at home in her adept hands.

After graduating from the prestigious Australian National University with a degree in Jazz, Liz practiced her art in some of the finest 5-star hotels and resorts in Australia and performed before some of that county's most demanding audiences . . . including prime ministers!

Liz' jazz roots were to become very useful when it came time for her to enter the world of popular music. Jazz imbues its best performers with a sophisticated and unique skill . . . improvisation. A type of musical story telling; the ability to construct a tune in real time, on-the-fly as it were.

This technical ability is reflected in the songs she writes. Liz understands how to construct and use sophisticated chord progressions. Her arrangements are well thought out and more complex than that normally found in popular music; her riffs are closer to excerpts of solos and the vocal harmonies she frequently employs are born of her time working with vocal ensembles. In short, Liz has the musical knowledge and taste to invest each song with interesting and esoteric musical detail, the subtleties of which are often only able to be unveiled by those who truly understand.

Liz Webb Her lyrics mimic her music in their intelligent presentation. Be-lying her age, Liz is a writer who draws from the old school. Those greats such as James Taylor and Dan Fogelberg, who put such a genuine feel and contemporary sincerity into their lyrics, are the inspiration for many of Liz Webb's lyrics. Concepts that require entire essays for philosophers to express are often portrayed by Liz in a line, a verse, a song. Liz believes that a song is more than mere melody; a song is not complete unless the listener takes something with them after the last note has died.

As the owner of her own state-of-the-art 32 track digital recording studio, Ms. Webb has first hand knowledge of the use of some of the best hard disk recording hardware and software available today, proving herself technically, as well as musically, self-sufficient. She also knows her own material intimately and if you listen carefully you may still find new and interesting things happening in her mixes, even after many airings of her songs.

Liz writes the lyrics, composes the music, sings the songs, plays virtually every instrument on every track, and then sculpts each song in her own recording studio according to the way she conceived of the song in the first place. There is no outside interpretation, no one else interposing their ideas on hers; the essence of the song, as it was originally conceived, is delivered direct to the ears of her audience.

There is a philosophy behind Liz Webb's musical presentation in all it's forms (writing, recording and performing) and that is that she truly understands what quality music is all about. Like a highly qualified engineer, she never lowers her sights or compromises her standards and this is evident in the quality of the material she produces.

"The listening audience deserves the best you can possibly deliver" she once remarked. This philosophy is self evident when listening to some of the tracks from her latest album Nutshell. Liz Webb The warm sensuality of You Make Me Melt, the contemporary expressions of life in Stranger Things Have Happened and Blink, the intriguing multi-layered harmonies in Control, and the musically induced feeling of being adrift on a gentle sea in Rocks My Boat, all conspire to confirm the fact that Liz Webb is one of the finest, most genuine performers of our time.

Few artists ever reach the level of behind-the-scenes technical knowledge that Liz has, either. How many female singers ever sit behind a mixing desk and adjust faders, gain controls, send and receive levels, and sub-out allocations? One popular female singer once remarked that she spent a total of only two hours in the studio recording her latest album. In stark contrast, Liz has been known to spend two hours or more listening intently to a mix and deciding on just which reverb, effect or delay best suits a specific vocal or snare drum track.
